Houstown & The Order of Holy Rebith "OHR"
Houstown was the first of six human dominated cities established on the North American Continent after the "Shift". It is home to nearly 732,000 inhabitants. Most are human, others are varying species of beast that the Order have deemed to be nonthreatening.

The city is entirely self sufficient, it has both agricultural and industrial divisions that are capable of supporting the population but only by a bare minimum. The Order controls all of it. They are the undisputed law. Food is rationed, jobs are assigned and everyone must contribute. Those that refuse are banished to the desertion zones.

No one has challenged the Order's control in over a century. Speaking as messengers of God and designers of salvation, they became the dominate religious and political force of the new era.

With the use of ancient science and military journals they managed to rediscovered technologies that were thought to have been lost. This helped establish their credibility among the people. With that technology they built an army that would help police their interests and push forward their divine message of Faith, Obey and Survive,

Despite their considerable military prowess, the Order does not maintain its control entirely through force. Despair has made humanity complacent to their will. Desperate to feel hope again, they willingly sacrifice their lives for the acceptance of an eternal being who demands unconditional love and obedience and who might one day spare them the horrors of reality. It is a lack of hope that gives the Order of Holy Rebirth its power. They preach a corrupted message of hope to the hopeless and with it they've achieved total control over whats left of the human race.

Valkin Moore "Val"
1 Before being genetically modified by the Order into a hybrid creature, Valkin Moore was a doctor at Faith Hall Hospital in Houstown. During the years he spent, trying to help the injured and sick, Valkin lost touch with the better parts of his human nature. He stopped believing in hope. He could see only the horror and evil that human beings were capable of. Humanity had become a creature no longer deserving of the virtues of life. That's when he began killing people.

He resolved that the killing would never be indiscriminate, it always had a purpose. Sometimes it was to punish the evil, others it was to simply end suffering. In the end, he considered it a mercy. The pain and desperation of human life had driven him mad despite his logic.

After his capture and trial he was sentenced to death only to be pardoned and drafted into a special project known as the Angel Elite. It was sponsored by the Dr. Valdin Asimov and the Order. He was genetically modified into an experimental hybrid solider, designed with both human and various monster DNA sequences. Of the thirteen Angel Elite subjects, he was the only one to have survived, the rest went completely mad and were killed. The project was considered a failure and quickly dismantled. Valkin was granted asylum in Houstown and tossed out in the streets.

Since that time Valkin has lived amongst the people of Houstown, making a name for himself as a bounty hunter and mercenary. Ironically, by loosing his biological identity, he began to rediscover certain elements of his human nature that were lost. Although he would never admit it, there is hope in him.

Maggie May & the Kriyamana
q
Maggie is Valkin's spectral companion. She functions as Valkin's supernatural radar but more importantly she helps serve asValkin's conscience. Always reminding him that, regardless of "what" he been turned in to, he will always get to make the choice of "who" he is. Valkin is the only living creature that can see and communicate with her. Their bond is a mystery, neither understanding or knowing why exactly they've been paired. Maggie, much like Valkin and his tranformation, has difficulties remembering her life prior to her becoming an entity. All that she can recall of her actual life is being a prostitue in Houstown since she was very young. The rest is a jumbled mess of half memories and blurry recollections.

Maggie exists in the alternate state between death and the afterlife known as the Kriyamana. The Kriyamana is a karma based frequency that living souls generate and are engulfed in. When negative energy, or evil, is present the frequency is altered and Maggie can feel it. Her existence is like a stone in a great stream with the karmic energies of the living breaking and pass around her. She uses her situation to help Valkin in his endeavors hoping that someday it will all make sense.

Benson West "Ben"
s Benson is a man who still believes that humanity has something left to offer. Like Valkin, he's been a mercenary for several years now and is known for being "the most honest man you don't ever want to fuck with". He's also an amazing weaponsmith and able to construct nearly anything.

He started his career as a Holy Guard solider. He met Valkin very early on after being assigned to him on prisoner duty. The two formed a mutual respect for the other. Benson was young and influenced by Valkin's skewed perspective of the world. This experience left him with too many moral questions that needed answering.

He left the H-Guard seeking out his own path. He spent years roaming the desertion zones and wastelands before finding his own identity. Ultimately, what he found was ambigious faith in the hope that someday humanity would overcome the weaker parts of it's nature and prevail in the conflict it had brought upon itself.

Upon meeting Valkin for a second time, after his transformation, he promised Val that he would always be there for him when he needed him and that he would never give up hoping for a better world for wither of them. It was within this promise that an unspoken friendship was formed.

Benson is Val's only true friend.

Godbleeder "Godbleeders" are human hosts conceived with modified genetic coding. The coding was developed as a means to cure human susceptibility to various forms of monster infection. The genetic material of a Godbleeder can suppress both vampiric and lycanthropic cells. The host's heart, blood and liver must be used in creating the suppressant.

Please note: A "Godbleeder's" genetic material can only suppress a monster infection, it will not cure it. Thus it was deemed impractical for mass production. However, the Order of Holy Rebirth still has an active"Godbleeder" program and regularly conceives these modified children for various unknown reasons.

Chastity Vern
She's the six year old adopted daughter of Joseph Vern. Unknown to him, Chastity was the product of the Godbleeder program. Upon discovering that the Order had some kind of secret plans for her, he hired Valkin to save her. Valkin failed in that attempt.

Initially Chastity was murdered along with Valkin by a monster prime vampire known as Galus. The Order had designed her to be sacrificed in an effort to stop the monster prime's reawakening.

Incidentally her blood was mixed with Valkins and she was miraculously brought back to life by the rescue efforts of Benson and Nimh. She now possesses much of Valkin's physical characteristics and abilities such as his green skin and the ability to heal via blood drinking.

Dismayed and uncertain about what or who she is, she tags along with Val and crew, taking comfort in the idea that they are who she needs to be with.

Harak
d Harak has lived in Houstown for nearly a decade. Unlike most vampires he's not obsessed with mankind's ultimate annihilation. He sees the obvious irony of destroying ones food source where other vampires are blinded by instinct and arrogance. This doesn't make Harak a good guy though, he's more of a professional opportunist and is willing to play which ever side benefits him the most.

His shady dealings stretch far and wide through Houstown. Few people even know he exists because he's able to cover his tracks so well. The Order is aware of him but tolerates him because of their dealings in the past.

He lives within the desertion zone, just outside the borders of the city, at the request of the Order. For several years he's made his living secretly pleasuring aristocratic woman seeking new and thrilling sexual experiences.

It's a risky endeavor as the Order would surely kill him, as well and anyone seeking his services, if they found out. But again, Harak is a resourceful vampire and has ways of hiding his activities.

Joseph Vern
d Joseph was a political juggernaut in his day. He ascended the Order's Disciples hierarchy at a lightening quick pace. He understood how to speak to the people of Houstown on their own terms and was instrumental in strengthening the Order's military recruitment muscle.

His political glory days of are long since gone now. His choice to focus on family and more administrative duties have long since removed him from the spotlight, much to the dismay of his wife Emily and his mentor Simon.

After retreating from public office he devoted all of his energies into raising his adopted daughter Chastity. Upon learning the truth of her conception and the Order's mysterious plans for her, he hired Valkin to try and save her.

Upon hearing that Chastity had been killed he renounced his faith in both the Order and God. Despite being under house arrest, he escaped the clutches of the Order and has been AWOL ever since.

Simon Templesmith
d Simon is the most recent elected Commanding Disciple of the Order of Holy Rebirth. For a number of years he played an elusive role amongst within the Order, secretly pulling the strings and positioning it's key members. He's been the primary engineer of nearly all of the Order's governing body for over four decades.

Joesph Vern was one of his greatest success's and failures. Upon Joseph's decision to retreat from the active role of Commanding Disciple, Simon decided that the role of elusive puppeteer was no longer necessary. He stepped up to the forefront as an experienced and hard line believer in the divine mission and quickly won the support of the public.

Both ruthless and methodical, he leads with an unwavering faith and relentless determination for the salvation of humanity. There are no limits to his methods when it comes to controlling the public and delivering mankind a glorious new age of global dominance via the will of God.

Holy Guard "H-Guard"
The Holy Guard are the Order's primary policing and military force. They are taught to preserve the Order's interests, laws and all matters pertaining to the divine mission.

Each H-Guard is trained in both theology and combat by the Order. By offering a religious context to their duties, the Order maintains an unquestionable loyalty from the H-Guard. They are soldiers fighting a holy war, dedicated to the preservation of the Order and God's will.

They serve with a brainwashed fervor. Their training begins at the age of thirteen and ends at eighteen, the most impressionable years of life. Those that fail the training are labeled as pariahs and are generally driven out of the city by the public.

All families of Houstown are obligated by law to volunteer at least one of their children for the H-Guard. While not a popular law at first it was soon accepted as a reasonable sacrifice for God's will to be carried out.

There are at least 200,000 active H-Guards in Houstown.
